TRUCKING TRENDS

3 TECHNOLOGY TRENDS IN TRUCKING

In years the changes are the only constant thing that we can expect. Even in business, there is nothing more expected than changes. Also, when it comes to the trucking industry, there is a constant change, like: changing fuel costs, increased regulations, driver shortages, etc. These issues definitely have an effect on industry revenue. However, they are not technically disruptive.

Nowadays, three distinct trends are disrupting this industry – telematics, last-mile delivery and driverless trucks. But whether companies like it or not, fighting these changes is futile. The future is now.

1. Telematics

This fleet management technology enables vehicles to send, receive and store information related to that vehicle via telecommunication devices. This technology gives full visibility into every aspect of your vehicle’s situation (location, detention time, equipment issues etc.). And provides the data necessary to optimize your entire fleet’s performance.
Fleet managers that are dealing with this challenge need to look at telematics as more than just a way to be compliant with new and potential regulations. The data provided also give information that can be used to make more strategic decisions for fleet operations and performance. So, at the end, the positive impact of the telematics on the business in general is the most important thing for the companies.

2. Last-Mile Delivery

Nowadays businesses are trying to find more traditional ways to get their goods to customers faster and at less expense. Despite these traditional ways there are some new option like Wal-Mart’s use of employees to deliver goods ordered online to customers located on the employee’s route home, or Amazon’s drone delivery initiative.
The closer proximity to the customer means faster delivery, and makes the customer happy. That also means savings in time and fuel, reduced chances of delivery delays due to weather or construction, and a range of other issues that can plague long-range delivery.
But, finally, shippers need to do their due diligence to decide what works best for their type of business.

3. Driverless Trucks

Despite many statements, autonomous trucks will not be “human-less” trucks, at least in the beginning. You’ll still need someone on board for the near future to guarantee that unforeseen issues can be dealt with. So, don’t wait for autonomous trucks to take advantage of today’s safety technology. From parking assist, to lane departure warnings, to technology that’s able to monitor the health of the driver, technology that will ensure greater safety and reduce risk is available. In the end, do a cost-benefit analysis and ascertain the ROI on installing such technology.

STATISTICS

RIDING IN A FULLY AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE – 55% SAY NO!

Gartner, Inc. expects to see multiple launches of autonomous vehicles around 2020. But, the full impact on society and the economy will not begin to emerge until approximately 2025. Consumer and social acceptance is a key driver in autonomous vehicle adoption.

Consumer adoption of autonomous driving

The Gartner Consumer Trends in Automotive online survey, conducted from April 2017 through May 2017, polled 1,519 people in the US and Germany and found that 55% of respondents will not consider riding in a fully autonomous vehicle, while 71% may consider riding in a partially autonomous vehicle. Concerns around technology failures and security are key reasons why many consumers are cautious about fully autonomous vehicles.

“Fear of autonomous vehicles getting confused by unexpected situations, safety concerns around equipment and system failures, and vehicle and system security are top concerns around using fully autonomous vehicles,” said Mike Ramsey, research director at Gartner.

Survey respondents agreed that fully autonomous vehicles do offer many advantages, like improved fuel economy and a reduced number and severity of crashes.

Autonomous vehicle industry development and impact on driving safety and quality of life

Many companies are currently developing different technologies required to enable vehicles to detect and understand their surroundings.

“The automotive industry is investing in new safety and convenience technology at a rate not seen since the dawn of the automobile. The experience of owning and operating a car will be dramatically different in 10 years,” Mr Ramsey said.

SUPPLY CHAIN

THE FUTURE OF GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAINS

The digital era is forcing businesses to adapt and embrace more agile ways of operating. Two trends are now forcing stakeholders within supply chain management to rethink their strategies.  Also, to integrate digital innovation into their daily operations.

Shaping Supply Chains

Data is evidently the new fuel. It is streaming into every type of business at a rapid pace. This data comes from smart devices, social media, online interfaces and many more digitized channels.

For logistics and supply-chain managers, predictive and prescriptive analytics are already presenting a number of smart applications. But most important is to find efficient ways of integrating and using such applications. Such applications include route optimization in real time, increased visibility, faster reaction times to supply chain challenges, and product tracking data to understand customer purchasing behavior and support requirements.

Embracing Online Marketplaces

The second major digital trend that will impact the supply chain is the digitalization of the marketplaces. Mobile-based and online marketplaces platforms will disrupt the status quo within logistics.

This trend will connect sellers, buyers, freight forwarders, financial institutions and many more directly through an open, online platform.

With big data and the emergence of online platforms to better utilize resources within the supply chain, there will soon be very clear who will dominate on the markets. As always, those who have the vision, commitment and skills to harness this ongoing digital transformation will be the ones that will succeed.

SOFTWARE

FLEET MANAGEMENT REPORTS

The EZtoTrack GPS tracking and fleet management system features many different reports. The data generated from the reports, provides a detailed analysis of the operation of the fleet and improvement of its efficiency and productivity.

Reports in the system are displayed in the form of a simulation on a geographic map or in grids and charts. The basic report for vehicle movement history (motion simulation) provides data on: vehicle position, speed, sensors status, time and date, engine status, latitude and longitude, and direction of the vehicles movement.

In addition, the system includes mileage reports, status and conditions, as well as report for active working hours for special vehicles and heavy machinery. The mileage reports include total mileage, total vehicle inactivity, total driving time, average speed etc.

In conclusion, the EZtoTrack system provides reports for:

  • Start and end of movement,
  • Time of retention in POI (Point of Interest) when visiting pre-defined objects,
  • Past miles,
  • Violations alerts,
  • Maximum and minimum speed,
  • Status of installed sensors, etc.

In order to meet the users’ needs, the option to develop new reports is always open as a complementary service.
