A yearly survey conducted by global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright founded that 43% of respondents believe that big data and predictive analytics will be the most significant driver of change in the transportation industry over the next five years. The survey includes 196 logistics providers, manufacturers, financiers, government regulators etc.
According to the latest poll conducted by them, The way ahead, 41% of respondents view new technology as the “optimal investment opportunity” for their industry, ahead of investment in infrastructure improvements.
However, the transport sector increasingly looks to become more “digitized” in the next five years. Also, technology investment is on the rise and it seems to continue.
59% believe that the industry will face heightened competition. But with fleet management software, big data and predictive analytics, give fleet managers the ability to anticipate repairs and maintenance and to better understand and forecast consumer behavior. So, this gives them a significant competitive advantage.
Finally, inadequate infrastructure is believed to pose the greatest challenge to the operational efficiency of the logistics industry. Together with a lack of suitably qualified people, both cited by 27%.
SELF-DRIVING TECHNOLOGY
WILL DRIVERLESS TRUCKS ELIMINATE MILLIONS OF JOBS?
A new report from the International Transport Forum (ITF) and three partner groups estimates that autonomous trucks could reduce the demand for new drivers in the U.S. and Europe from 50-70% by 2030. Up to 4.4 million driving jobs could become redundant, as reported by Fleet Owner.
According to the report, an estimated 6.4 million U.S. and European truck driving jobs will be available in 2030 only if autonomous vehicles don’t become a reality. Also, it is estimated that only 5.6 million drivers will be available to fill those jobs. So, this trend could address looming hiring challenges for multiple truck-based industries by reducing the driver demand quickly.
These changes will not happen overnight. They are expected to happen sooner for long-distance routes or less challenging suburban areas. Because of it, job losses are expected, all as a result of autonomous trucks. While any solution to the driver shortage may be welcome news to fleet managers, the rise of autonomous trucks can open new challenges from labor groups.

FLEETS OF THE FUTURE – VEHICLES POWERED BY NATURAL GAS VS. ELECTRIC OR HYBRID VEHICLES
NGVs
Natural gas powers roughly 15.2 million vehicles worldwide. Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) are good choices for high-mileage, centrally fueled fleets. Compressed natural gas (CNG) tanks and safety are improving, and in many cases CNG can provide adequate range for the required vehicle application. The most important advantage of natural gas as a transportation fuel is reduced greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional gasoline and diesel fuels.
HYBRID VEHICLES
On the other side, regarding hybrid vehicles, John Meese, senior director of heavy equipment for Waste Management, told Waste Dive “We’ll adopt any technology that we can that gives us a cutting edge.” He said traditional wheel loader engines burn between 7.5 to 9 gallons of diesel fuel per day and run for the entirety of a full shift, whereas the LX1 prototype only used 4 to 5 gallons per day and its engine was active for less than half that time. This is due to the fact that the LX1 runs on a 3.5-liter engine versus a 13-liter engine in standard models. Also reduced slippage can help cut back on the large expense of buying new tires for transfer station operations. Meese estimated that a 5-10% reduction in tire expenses can lead to six-figure savings. “So, if we have to spend a little bit more to meet emissions standards in California — but in doing so we can get dramatic fuel savings, tire cost savings, the potential for hours of operations savings — we’ll go ahead and buy the hybrid,” said Meese.
While many companies have been putting their resources into new vehicles powered by natural gas, this is just a reminder that electric or hybrid options probably will play a larger role in fleets of the future.
